Rose is 93 years old and has lived a long happy life in her own home. She and her husband Tommy raised 10 children at home and have seen countless grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even a few great-great-grandchildren come through the doors.
Sadly Tommy is no longer with her. Instead Rose lives at home with the loving support of her family, carers and an unwelcome resident 'dementia'.
Dementia has been with her for several years now and continues to steal her memories, confuse, and at times frustrate her. Rose has a tendency to repeat herself (often to the amusement of her family) and can ask the same question over and over, unable to retain the answer. But despite its best efforts dementia has not taken her sense of humour, her eye for good style nor her love for her home and family.
Rose's home is a contrast of past and present life and I'm intrigued to know where her mind sits. 'Are you here or there'? The question would only confuse her.
You'll often find Rose curled up in her favourite spot on the couch in the foetal position snoozing throughout the day, perhaps only mustering up the energy to say for the 50th time "yes my dearie" or "that'd be her".
Rose is loved unconditionally, pampered and polished, and kept active by her nearest and dearest.
This story is present, of a life well lived and looked after.
Dementia
According to Dementia Services Information and Development Centre (dementia.ie) more and more women are living well into their 80's and beyond. As such, it is estimated that there are in the region of 36,650 women now living with dementia in Ireland. Dementia is twice as likely to affect women than men.
It is also estimated that there are over 50,000 carers of people with dementia in Ireland. Women are two-and-a-half times more likely than men to become carers of a person with dementia. Caring for a loved one with dementia takes time, energy and above all, love; it can be a long and emotional journey.
This story is dedicated to Maura, who, for over five years has dedicated her time, energy and love into caring for Rose and ensuring she can live happily in her home.
