You don't need a grand venue, a packed dancefloor or twelve hours of photography for your wedding day to feel complete.
Some of the most memorable weddings are the simplest ones. A ceremony surrounded by your closest family, a few quiet moments together before everything begins, and afterwards, raising a pint in one of Dublin's best pubs with the people you love most.
That's exactly how Arlene and Andy chose to celebrate their wedding.
Their intimate Dublin city wedding began with a civil ceremony at the Registry Office on Grand Canal Street before everyone climbed aboard a bus to continue the celebrations at Doheny & Nesbitt, finishing with dinner together at Suesey Street.
It was relaxed from beginning to end, and a lovely reminder that weddings don't have to follow tradition to be incredibly meaningful.
A relaxed start before the ceremony
We met outside the Registry Office a little before the ceremony, which meant we could take a few family photographs while everyone was still arriving and there was no rush. It also meant there was time for a few relaxed portraits before the ceremony, without taking them away from their guests afterwards.
Arlene's dad walked her into the ceremony, where the room was filled with smiles from the very beginning. There was plenty of laughter throughout the ceremony, making it feel wonderfully relaxed and completely true to them.
From the Registry Office to Doheny & Nesbitt
Once the ceremony was over and the hugs and congratulations had settled, everyone climbed aboard the bus together for the short journey to Doheny & Nesbitt.
I love this part of a city wedding. There's no long drive between venues or hours spent travelling across the country. Instead, the day keeps moving naturally. Guests stay together, conversations continue, and before long everyone is gathered in the warm surroundings of a Dublin pub.
Doheny & Nesbitt was the perfect choice. Full of character and history, it provided a cosy backdrop for the next part of the afternoon. Arlene and Andy simply enjoyed being newly married while family caught up over drinks around them. We also stole a few relaxed portraits that never felt like they were taking them away from the celebration.
The warmth of a Dublin pub
One of the things I love most about Dublin city weddings is that you never have to travel far for beautiful photographs.
Doheny & Nesbitt gave us everything we needed. The dark wood interiors, cosy corners and soft window light created a completely different feel to the ceremony, while still allowing the afternoon to unfold naturally around us.
Arlene and Andy settled in with a well-earned pint of Guinness, sharing a quiet moment together before being pulled back into conversation with family and friends. Some of my favourite photographs from the day came from those few minutes — nothing staged, just the two of them enjoying being together.
I also gained a little assistant. Jack had brought along his own camera and spent part of the afternoon enthusiastically photographing me while I photographed everyone else. I don't think I've ever had such close supervision! It was such a lovely little reminder of how children experience wedding days completely differently to the adults, and it made for some wonderfully genuine moments.
Small weddings can tell the biggest stories
Days like this are a reminder that the size of a wedding has very little to do with how memorable it feels.
With just a few hours together, Arlene and Andy created a day that was completely their own. There was no pressure to follow a traditional timeline, no rushing from one formal event to the next, and no expectation that every minute had to be filled. Instead, they celebrated with the people closest to them, in places that meant something to them, and the photographs reflect exactly that.
If you're planning a small wedding in Dublin, whether it's a registry office ceremony, an intimate city celebration or simply a day that feels a little less traditional, there's no need to overcomplicate it. Some of the best wedding photographs come from simply giving yourselves the space to enjoy the day together.
If this feels like your kind of wedding, I'd love to hear from you.
